â€Å"Fences† is a theater play run at Ensemble Theater located in Houston and it was written by August Wilson and directed by Eileen J. Morris. Fences is the African-American story of a black family trying to settle in the middle of the American Pittsburgh urban area in the 1950s. Wilson made special attention to the details of the time and brought them to the present, in a nice and original every day production. Fences play starts on a Friday, when Troy and Bono go to Troy s house as usual for their weekly drinking and chatting meeting. Troy has asked his boss, the reason why the black employees are not allowed to drive the garbage trucks, they can only to lift the garbage. On the other hand, Bono thinks Troy is cheating on his wife, Rose and he seemed to worry about them, since both are his friends. Troy and Rose s son, Cory, has been recruited by a college football team and Troy does not want him to do so, because he thought that it was a waste of time, since they did hired black players. Troy was in the Negro Leagues, so he never got a chance to play in the Major Leagues since he became too old to play. Fences’ writer August Wilson made a great work combining the type of theater, scenery, audience, acting performance, dynamic of drama, costumes, and lighting in an excellent live production. Leave the slide to air dry. B. Examination: 1. Place the slide under microscope on low powered lens. 2. Move the slide using the apparatus until the sample can be seen as a blur under the microscope. 3. Focus the lens to ensure that there is a sample directly under the lens. 4. Move to higher powered lens, repeat step 3. 5. Move to higher powered lens, repeat step 3 6. Move microscope aside and add Oil immersion, leave for a few seconds and re-examine the slide. Note Shape and colour and any other observations. Results and Observations: It was evident by visual examination that the alcohol was de-colouring or a least partially de-colouring the bacteria. The sample appeared a dark pink or close to violet by the naked eye; a microscope was needed to ensure results. Under the low powered microscope shades of pink were noted. Under the medium power, the shades were more clear but no shape could be made out. Under the high powered microscope clumps of pink rod (bacilli) shaped bacteria cells could be observed. Under Oil Immersion and high powered lens the cells could seen more spaced out and thus a clearer indication of the pink colour, bacilli shape and spores could be made out in the individual cells. Conclusion: The Shape was noted as Bacilli (Rod-like) shaped cells; a gram variable shape, distinct in either Gram Negative or Gram positive bacteria. We were married at sunset. Some might not consider that an auspicious time, but for me, it was a perfect compromise. I had wanted to be married in the daytime, outdoors, with sunlight streaming everywhere. For those minutes, my whole world was focused on his face, on the amber gold of his eyes and the way the light played off his hair. A jazz band set up nearby and began to play, providing background music for dinner. They had a space for dancing afterward too, though I didn’t dance nearly as much as I’d expected to at my wedding. There were too many people to see, too many people to thank for their support. I do believe that since the first speech, our class has been exceedingly better at public speaking then we were to begin with. I thought it was amazing that he grew up with a debilitating stutter and listening to him, a person would have absolutely no idea because of how well he can generate what he wants to say. He doesnt even get stuck sometimes. I think his job might be boring to o around and give the same speeches a lot but it is a remarkable story and it has probably impacted a lot of people. I liked that he used his speech as a workshop and discussed with us what happened that was effective in his speech and what happened that maybe TLD work so well. I thought his volume was a little quiet, but that was just because it was his casual voice. I wasnt sure If he was capable of being louder but then he was when he was making his radio announcer voice. HIS stories were also appropriate for all ages and I thought he did a very good Job at appealing to his audience. He also made a good point about suspense. Sometimes at the beginning of the speech, we tend to tell the audience everything we will be discussing and then they might not pay attention although that is the criteria. Garret mentioned that instead we should give a brief synopsis and dont tell the audience everything. I think having listened to him, I can work on my vocal variety, preparing a lot better, and more relevant hand gestures.Also, I need to learn how to paint a picture for my audience better because he did that for us and it really helps the audience stay focused and interested in the speaker. I think this is a good idea especially for speeches that can last for 8 minutes. He was very helpful to listen to because we were able to see a demonstration of what we could Improve on for ourselves and usually we Just watch our peers and classmates and hope they are doing the correct thing because our speeches will robbery end up being salary to theirs.Again, I think he is an inspiration to us all because he became a public speaker courageous of him and I think we could learn a few things from him. We shouldnt be afraid of anything because we will get nowhere in life if we are living in fear, and also we can better understand that we shouldnt make fun of anybody or anything because everybody wants to be involved and included and it is sad that people would get upset and mad with him when he wasnt able to vocalizes what he wanted to say. I think our class learned lots and enjoyed it very much.

All Quiet On The Western Front Essays (1050 words) - Free Essays All Quiet on the Western Front Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the greatest war novels of all time. It is a story, not of Germans, but of men, who even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war. The entire purpose of this novel is to illustrate the vivid horror and raw nature of war and to change the popular belief that war is an idealistic and romantic character. The story centers on Paul Ba?mer, who enlists in the German army with glowing enthusiasm. But in the course of war, he is consumed by it and in the end is "weary, broken, burnt out, rootless, and without hope." Through Ba?mer, Remarque examines how war makes man inhuman. He uses excellent words and phrases to describe crucial details to this theme. "The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts." Ba?mer and his classmates who enlisted into the army see the true reality of the war. They enter the war fresh from school, knowing nothing except the environment of hopeful youth and they come to a premature maturity with the war, their only home. "We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces. We are not youth any longer." They have lost their innocents. Everything they are taught, "the world of work, duty, culture, and progress" are not the slightest use to them because the only thing they need to know is how to survive. They need to know how to escape the shells as well as the emotional and psychological torment of the war. The war takes an heavy toll on the soldiers who fight in it. The terror of death will infest the minds of soldiers and bring about horrible images of death and destruction until they break down and go to pieces. "Every hour and everyday, every shell and every death cuts this thin [line of sanity], and the years waste it rapidly." In these dangerous moments, anybody would have gone mad, have deserted their post, or have fallen. It takes a special kind of soldier to deal with this emotional abuse; a soldier who will not go to pieces at the sight of a mutilated body; it takes a soldier like Ba?mer. Ba?mer has "grown accustomed to it; war is the cause of death like influenza and dysentery. The deaths are merely more frequent, more varied and terrible." He has rid himself of all feelings and thoughts. His emotions lie buried in the earth along with the soldiers who fell prey to them. His dullness protects him from going mad at the sight a slaughtered comrade or butchered friend. He wants to live at all costs so "every expression of his life must serve one purpose and one purpose only, preservation of existence, and he is absolutely focused on that." For the cost of life is the death of his emotions, his survival depends on it. Every shell that falls, every shot that fires, a soldier must face the possible certainty of death. To Ba?mer, death carries hand grenades and a bayonet, and a rifle really to take what he has long protected-his life. Whenever he looks into the eyes of an enemy soldier, he does not see a man, but sees death staring back at him. What can you do but fight back? He can not and will not coexist with you. It does not matter that he is a man of your same distinction; it does not matter if he has a mother, a father, a sister or a brother. All that matters is that he wants to take your life. The only way for you to live is to destroy him before he does destroys you. Your salvation means his sacrifice. The life of a man is the price you pay for your continual existence. Ba?mer would destroy him because he threatens his survival and his survival is most important. "We march up, moody or good-tempered soldiers-we reach the zone where the front begins and become on the instant animals." The fate of Ba?mer and the fate of all soldiers depends on their faith in their primal instincts.

He works the cash register and is seemingly an ordinary nineteen year old boy. One day at work, Sammy sees three girls enter the grocery store, each girl wearing only a two piece bathing suit. Immediately he begins to analyze each girl and their unique traits, in a rather crude sort of way. He is a careless young man and gives an impression that he is somewhat ill-mannered at times. One can see this by his actions and diction in the story. For example, Sammy sees the backside of one of the girls that comes into the store and he says, â€Å"She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can†¦ (P.310).† The three girls cause Sammy to make a rather rational decision. Perhaps while trying to impress them, while the girls are making their way out of the store, Sammy tells his boss that he quits and he hopes the girls hear it. In this paper, I will discuss how actions like these express Sammy’s language and convey his character. Sammy acts like most nineteen year old boys do. He thinks he knows the world and the people around him and how they work. However, his careless actions cause him problems at times. Sammy shows that he can be easily distracted when he says, â€Å"I stood there with my hand on a box of HiHo crackers trying to remember if I rang it up or not. I ring it up again and the customer starts giving me hell (P.310).† Sammy is so obsessed over the girls that he forgets about his duties as an employee. In return for his carelessness, Sammy gets an earful from the customer. He also seems ill-mannered when he says, â€Å"I uncrease the bill, tenderly as you may imagine, it coming from between the two smoothest scoops of vanilla I had ever known were there (P.312),† referring to Queenie’s body parts. Although Sammy is careless and ill-mannered, he also seems principled and firm. He gets upset with Lengel scolding the young ladies and Sammy, without thinking twice, acts rationally and decides to quit. He knows this decision will upset his parents, but he sticks with this decision. Lengel says, â€Å"You don’t want to do this to your Mom and Dad,† and Sammy says, â€Å"It’s true, I don’t. But it seems to me that once you begin a gesture it’s fatal not to go through with it (P.313).† This statement shows that Sammy is unyielding and once he has his mind set on something, he doesn’t think twice. I believe Sammy makes a mistake by quitting. He did it because he thought the girls would hear and pay him some attention, but it still is not worth losing a job over a group of girls that he might not ever see again. The setting of the story is an interesting one. The story seems like an abstract sort of romance, except it takes place in a grocery store. The grocery store does not seem like the proper setting for a romantic story. Instead, it is just an ordinary place around town. The girls could have thought of Sammy as any ordinary guy just like they though of A P as any ordinary grocery store, as if the he is just a part of the place where he works. Sammy’s actions and setting help the reader better interpret his character, just as the setting and diction do for any other story. One can understand and visualize the feelings and thoughts of a character through the character’s actions in the story. Los Angeles Lakers: A history The Lakers were founded in 1948 and named after Minnesota. They were named after Minnesota because it was the land of ten thousand lakes. The Lakers have become a great franchise because of their player and their great sportsmanship. Pro Basketball has been around since 1898, only seven years after the game was invented. The Lakers hired John Kundla as their first coach from Saint Thomas College. The Lakers then won the 1948 NBL Championship. The next year the team moved to BAA (which is another basketball league) and also won the Championship. In 1979 they moved to California. The old Lakers owner traded the team, The Forum and the Kings to Jerry Buss for a 70 million dollar deal. After the purchase, Jerry Buss wanted the Laker games to be the most exciting event in Los Angeles, so he introduced the Laker girls dance team. This attracted many viewers. In their half century of basketball, the Lakers have had many outstanding players and many memorable games. This has made many Los Angeles residences die hard fans. Their team colors are, purple gold and white. They have played in many world wide arenas. The following arenas are, Minneapolis Auditorium, Minneapolis Armory, L.A. After carefully researching the controversial topic I have been able to come to some conclusions, as to which program is more effective, and practical. However it is important to first look into where kindergarten all began. There is no denying the importance of the care and education of young children. That is why early childhood educators have been motivated for centuries to create high quality programs for the young. One of the most innovative and lasting programs that was created was German educator Friedrich Froebel’s concept of kindergarten.
